Mom Squad with Emily D (Mommy Connections East)

I met Emily when I was a guest speaker at her Mommy Connections group many months ago. After that, I reached out again to learn about why mom groups are so essential to motherhood! We bonded over coffee and chatted about how her group is working to help moms in both the prepartum and postpartum!

Why do you think it’s important for women to be part of a community like Mommy Connections after giving birth?

Being a new mother is hard. The transition is huge. It's lonely and isolating - largely because you're not only overwhelmed by your new role but new motherhood brings with it a cocktail of hormones that make understanding your role and expectations of yourself wonderfully overwhelming.

Do you offer any programs for pregnant moms?

Yes. Many. We try to host a monthly birth prep each month starring Olivia Scobie - postpartum therapist and overall champion of all pre and postnatal women. We are in the process of developing a day long session in partnership with Bloom.

When and where do your programs take place?

All over the East End. Currently they are taking place at Sprouts on Carlaw in Leslieville and at Main and Danforth at Upper Beaches Music Studio.

Can you take us through how each class is structured?

Our Mom and Baby classes have two presenters who discuss topics relevant to Moms - from pelvic floor rehabilitation to books to read to your kids.

What’s the first thing you do every morning to start your day off right?

Smooothies! I make a new smoothie almost every day!

What’s the first thing you do every morning to start your day off right?

The minute I wake up I turn on a leadership program called Thinking Into Results.

What’s your favourite self-care practice?

Leaving my kids with my husband at bedtime and wandering around without a schedule - sometimes I'll get a pedicure, other days I'll poke around a book store or just go for a walk and lose myself in a good book.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

My business coach always says - when you're planning something doesn't worry about the how it's a dream killer.
